Quick biography
Abel Makkonen Tesfaye — The Weeknd — was born on February 16, 1990, in Toronto, Canada, to Ethiopian immigrant parents. He dropped out of high school one weekend (hence the name, minus an “e” to avoid a trademark clash) and began uploading mysterious, faceless R&B mixtapes to YouTube in 2010.
The free House of Balloons / Thursday / Echoes of Silence trilogy rewrote modern R&B. Then came pop domination: Beauty Behind the Madness (2015), Starboy (2016) and After Hours (2020), whose “Blinding Lights” became the biggest Billboard Hot 100 song of all time by chart performance. His 2021 Super Bowl halftime show was watched by over 100 million people, and his After Hours til Dawn tour set the record for the highest-grossing tour by a male soloist in history.
