Quick biography

Oprah Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954, in Kosciusko, Mississippi. She began her broadcasting career in local television in Nashville and Baltimore before moving to Chicago, where her morning show quickly became a phenomenon.

The Oprah Winfrey Show went national in 1986 and ran for 25 seasons, making her one of the most influential figures in media history and reportedly the first Black woman billionaire. She went on to found the OWN television network and has given hundreds of millions to education and disaster relief, including the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa.

Before national fame she anchored the news in Nashville and co-hosted a Baltimore talk show, where her emotional, conversational style stood out. In 1984 she took over Chicago’s AM Chicago, took it to number one within months, and launched her own production company Harpo the same year the national show began — giving her rare ownership of her work. In 2021 her interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle became a global television event.
