Quick biography
Maya Indea Jama was born on August 14, 1994, in Bristol, England, to a Somali father and a Swedish mother, and was named after the poet Maya Angelou. She moved to London at 18 to chase a media career, starting out presenting a weekly music countdown on JumpOff.TV and working for Sky’s TRACE Sports, before joining MTV as a presenter in 2014.
Her rise ran through radio as much as television: she hosted #DriveWithMaya on Rinse FM from 2014 to 2017, then presented her own show on BBC Radio 1 from 2018 to 2020. On screen she co-presented ITV’s Cannonball, became the youngest person to co-host the MOBO Awards at 23, fronted the first series of Channel 4’s The Circle, and presented Glow Up: Britain’s Next Make-Up Star. In 2023 she took over as host of ITV2’s Love Island, a role she has held ever since, alongside its Games and All Stars spin-offs.
