Quick biography

Heidi Klum was born on June 1, 1973, in Bergisch Gladbach, West Germany, to a cosmetics-company executive father and a hairdresser mother. At 18, a friend persuaded her to enter the national “Model 92” contest; she beat 25,000 entrants, won a $300,000 modelling contract, and moved to New York to launch her career.

Her breakthrough came with the February 1998 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover, and in 1999 she became the first German model to join Victoria’s Secret as an Angel, a role she held for 13 years. She then reinvented herself as television’s fashion authority, hosting and judging Project Runway from 2004 and Germany’s Next Topmodel from 2006, winning an Emmy for Outstanding Host in 2013, and later judging America’s Got Talent.
