Quick biography
Mark Zuckerberg was born on May 14, 1984, in White Plains, New York. While studying at Harvard University, he launched the social network “thefacebook” from his dorm room in February 2004 together with fellow students.
Zuckerberg left Harvard to run the company full-time from Palo Alto, California. Facebook held one of the largest tech IPOs in history in 2012, acquired Instagram the same year and WhatsApp in 2014. In 2021 the parent company was renamed Meta to reflect its focus on building the metaverse.
In 2006 Zuckerberg famously turned down a reported $1 billion acquisition offer from Yahoo, betting Facebook would be worth far more. The company’s “move fast” engineering culture helped it dominate social networking, and in 2023 Meta launched Threads, a text-based app that gained tens of millions of users within days of release.
