Quick biography
Jeff Bezos was born on January 12, 1964, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He graduated from Princeton University in 1986 with degrees in electrical engineering and computer science, then worked on Wall Street before deciding to start an internet company.
In 1994 he founded Amazon in a Seattle garage as an online bookstore. It grew into one of the world’s largest companies, spanning e-commerce and cloud computing (Amazon Web Services). Bezos served as CEO until 2021, when he became executive chairman. In 2000 he founded the spaceflight company Blue Origin, and in 2013 he purchased The Washington Post newspaper.
Two of Amazon’s most important bets came in the mid-2000s: Amazon Web Services, launched in 2006, grew into the company’s main profit engine, and the Kindle e-reader (2007) helped popularize digital books. In 2017 Amazon bought the Whole Foods grocery chain, and in 2020 Bezos committed $10 billion of his own money to the Bezos Earth Fund for climate action.
