Quick biography
Elon Musk was born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa. As a child he taught himself computer programming and sold his first video game at the age of 12. At 17 he moved to Canada, and later to the United States, where he studied physics and economics at the University of Pennsylvania.
Musk co-founded the software company Zip2, which was sold in 1999, and then X.com, an online payments company that became PayPal and was later acquired by eBay. In 2002 he founded SpaceX with the goal of making space travel affordable through reusable rockets, and in 2004 he joined electric-car maker Tesla, becoming its CEO in 2008. Under his leadership Tesla grew into the world’s most valuable carmaker, and in 2022 he acquired Twitter, rebranding it as X.
Both ventures nearly collapsed in 2008: SpaceX’s first three Falcon 1 launches failed and Tesla was weeks from bankruptcy. A successful fourth Falcon 1 flight won NASA contracts that saved SpaceX, while Tesla survived on last-minute investment. Musk later founded the tunneling firm The Boring Company and the brain-interface company Neuralink, and in 2020 SpaceX’s Crew Dragon carried the first commercial crew to the International Space Station.

Legacy & influence
Musk’s legacy is already taking shape: reusable rockets cut the cost of reaching orbit dramatically and forced the entire space industry to adapt, while Tesla pushed every major carmaker toward electric vehicles years ahead of schedule. He remains a polarizing figure, but few dispute that he has reshaped two industries — spaceflight and automobiles — within a single career.
