Quick biography

Kanye Omari West was born on June 8, 1977, in Atlanta, Georgia, and raised in Chicago, Illinois, where he started making beats and rapping as a teenager. He first made his name behind the scenes, producing hit records for Jay-Z and other Roc-A-Fella artists in the early 2000s, before stepping out as a solo artist himself.

His debut album The College Dropout (2004) made him a star, and a run of acclaimed albums followed — Late Registration, Graduation, 808s & Heartbreak, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Yeezus. He has won 24 Grammy Awards, among the most of any rapper, and his work has repeatedly reshaped the sound of hip-hop. Beyond music he built the Yeezy fashion brand, first with Nike and then in a blockbuster partnership with Adidas.

Legacy & influence

In recent years his career has been defined as much by controversy as by music: antisemitic remarks in 2022 cost him the Adidas deal and other partnerships, and in January 2026 he published a full-page apology in The Wall Street Journal. In November 2026 he staged his comeback, presenting Yeezy Season 01 in Los Angeles on November 4 — his first runway show in four years — with all four of his children beside him. He also released the album Bully in March 2026 and signed with the label Gamma.
