1946–2026 · Born January 19, 1946 · Died August 25, 2026
Dolly Rebecca Parton was born on January 19, 1946, in a two-room cabin in Sevier County, Tennessee — the fourth of 12 children, so poor her father paid the doctor with a sack of cornmeal. She was performing on local radio by age 10, debuted at the Grand Ole Opry at 13, and moved to Nashville the day after graduating high school.
What followed was one of the greatest careers in music history: more than 100 million records sold, 25 No. 1 country hits, 11 Grammys, and songwriting credits on timeless classics — “Jolene,” “I Will Always Love You,” “9 to 5,” “Coat of Many Colors.” She conquered Hollywood too (9 to 5, Steel Magnolias), built the Dollywood empire, and through her Imagination Library gave away over 200 million free books to children.
Parton was married to Carl Dean for nearly 60 years, fiercely guarding their private life while living one of music’s most public careers.
In September 2026 she topped Google’s most-searched-people chart as the world mourned her. She died on August 25, 2026, aged 80, mourned by millions — and by fellow icons from Beyoncé to Eminem who paid public tribute.
