Bob Dylan was born Robert Allen Zimmerman on May 24, 1941, in Duluth, Minnesota, and grew up in the iron-mining town of Hibbing. As a teenager he soaked up rock and roll, folk and blues, teaching himself guitar and harmonica and playing in local bands. He took the name Dylan, reportedly in honour of the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, and in 1961 he hitchhiked to New York City, where he began playing folk songs in the coffeehouses of Greenwich Village.
His breakthrough came fast: his self-titled debut arrived in 1962, and The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan (1963) gave the world “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall”. “The Times They Are a-Changin’” (1964) became an anthem of the civil rights and anti-war movements. In 1965 he famously “went electric”, releasing Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited, whose six-minute single “Like a Rolling Stone” shattered the idea that a hit had to be three minutes long. Blonde on Blonde followed in 1966, and Blood on the Tracks (1975) is still regarded as one of the great albums of his career.
Born Robert Allen Zimmerman, Dylan legally changed his name to Robert Dylan and has kept his private life famously guarded, rarely giving interviews and letting the songs speak for themselves.
Dylan has never stopped reinventing himself: through country, gospel and blues phases, a celebrated memoir, Chronicles: Volume One (2004), painting and sculpture exhibitions, and the so-called Never Ending Tour, which has kept him on stage for decades. In 2016 he became the first musician ever to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, honoured “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”. He had already received a special Pulitzer citation in 2008, an Academy Award in 2001 for “Things Have Changed”, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012. In November 2026, at 85, he made headlines again when Pope Leo XIV welcomed him to the Vatican during his tour of Italy.
