Quick biography

Roy Frank “RJ” Mitte III was born on August 21, 1992, in Jackson, Mississippi. A difficult birth left him with brain damage, and at three he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy; his legs were put in casts, and he used braces and crutches through most of his childhood. Through sport and exercise he eventually outgrew the walking devices, moved with his family to Los Angeles in 2006, and trained with talent manager Addison Witt — deliberately seeking roles where his disability could educate viewers.

That search led to his breakthrough: in 2007 he was cast as Walter “Flynn” White Jr. on AMC’s Breaking Bad, the sarcastic, well-meaning son of Bryan Cranston’s Walter White, appearing across all five seasons (2008–2013). Because his real condition was milder than his character’s, he learned to walk with crutches and slow his speech for the role — and the performance became one of television’s most visible portrayals of disability. The cast won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Ensemble in a Drama Series in 2014, and Mitte received the SAG-AFTRA Harold Russell Award in 2013.
