Imran Khan was born on October 5, 1952, in Lahore, Pakistan. A fast-bowling all-rounder, he made his Test debut for Pakistan in 1971 and captained the national team from 1982, leading Pakistan to its first and only Cricket World Cup title in 1992 before retiring from the sport.
After cricket he focused on philanthropy and politics. He founded the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital in Lahore in 1994, named after his mother, and founded the political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in 1996. He served as the Prime Minister of Pakistan from 2018 to 2022.
Khan was educated at Oxford University’s Keble College, where he also played county cricket. After nearly retiring in 1987 he returned at the request of Pakistan’s president and rebuilt the team around young talent, delivering his famous “cornered tigers” speech before the 1992 World Cup final. His mother’s death from cancer inspired years of fundraising that built the Shaukat Khanum hospital, and he later founded Namal University in Mianwali.
Khan has two sons, Sulaiman and Kasim. He is known for his philanthropy-first public image, with the cancer hospital remaining his most celebrated non-cricket achievement.
Few figures in Pakistan’s history have dominated two completely different arenas the way Imran Khan has — first as the nation’s greatest cricket captain, then as a prime minister. His hospitals and university remain widely respected institutions regardless of political views.
