Condoleezza Rice was born on November 14, 1954, in Birmingham, Alabama. A piano prodigy, she earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Denver at 19, her master’s from Notre Dame, and her PhD from Denver at 26, becoming a Stanford political science professor and later the university’s provost (1993–1999).
Rice served as National Security Advisor from 2001 to 2005 — the first woman in the role — under President George W. Bush, after advising his father’s administration on Soviet affairs.
Rice is an accomplished classical pianist who has performed with Yo-Yo Ma. She has never married.
In 2005 she became the 66th U.S. Secretary of State, the first African American woman in the role, serving until 2009. She then returned to Stanford as a professor and Hoover Institution fellow.
