Prabhas’ Spirit vs Ranbir’s Ramayana 2: Diwali 2027 Box Office Clash Is On

Diwali 2027 just became the most exciting date on Indian cinema’s calendar. Filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga announced on Sunday that his Prabhas-starrer Spirit — earlier slated for March 5, 2027 — will now release worldwide on October 29, 2027, unveiling a new poster of Prabhas in a rugged bearded look with dark sunglasses and a cap.

The new date puts Spirit on a direct collision course with Ramayana Part 2, Nitesh Tiwari’s epic sequel starring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana, which is also locked for the Diwali 2027 window. The first chapter, Ramayana: Rise of a Legend, arrives this November.

The clash carries a delicious irony. Vanga’s last film was Animal (2023) — starring Ranbir Kapoor himself — which earned over ₹900 crore worldwide. His new leading lady, Triptii Dimri, also broke out in Animal opposite Ranbir. Now the director and his protégée will compete against their former collaborator’s mythological spectacle.

Spirit is billed as a gritty, high-octane cop drama with Prabhas playing a fierce, uncompromising officer taking on an international crime syndicate. It is produced by T-Series and Bhadrakali Pictures and also stars Vivek Oberoi — marking Vanga’s first directorial outing since Animal.

Why this matters: Diwali is Indian cinema’s most lucrative window, and two mega-projects splitting it is rare — both will fight for the same screens and the same festive audience. Vanga announcing the shift with a poster drop on X shows how release dates themselves have become marketing events. For more star stories, visit our Did You Know collection.
