Rajinikanth has done it again, and this time at a speed few saw coming. Eight days after hitting theatres on October 15, his Nelson Dilipkumar-directed sequel Jailer 2 has crossed the ₹600 crore mark at the worldwide box office — Filmfare’s trade tally puts the eight-day total at ₹606.05 crore, while Bollywood Hungama’s estimates push it even higher, to ₹616 crore. Whichever tracker you believe, the milestone makes it one of the fastest ₹600-crore earners Tamil cinema has ever produced.
The day-by-day breakdown tells a classic superstar-run story. Day 1 (October 15) opened at ₹59.7 crore India net, dipped to ₹37.1 crore on day 2, then exploded over the opening weekend with ₹103.1 crore in India net. Days 5 and 6 averaged ₹45 crore each before the inevitable weekday slide — ₹28.15 crore on day 7 (October 21) and ₹17.15 crore in India plus roughly ₹5 crore overseas on day 8. The shape of that curve matters: front-loaded but not collapsing, which is why trade watchers are treating the second weekend — now under way — as the real test of whether ₹700 crore is reachable.
The film’s engine is not Rajinikanth alone. Nelson Dilipkumar has turned Jailer into a franchise built on event cameos: Hrithik Roshan makes his official Tamil cinema debut, Mohanlal returns in his famous “Matthew” avatar at a critical moment, and Kannada star Shiva Rajkumar appears alongside Jackie Shroff, Mithun Chakraborty and Vidya Balan. Suraj Venjaramoodu (Dileep) and SJ Suryah (Bodhi Kalpak) anchor the villainy, and the film ends by teasing another sequel — the surest sign a franchise has industrialised its fanbase. It is a formula the whole industry is watching: star equity compounded across languages, one cameo at a time.
The scale of the run is clearest next to this week’s competition. Rajkummar Rao’s Prahaar: The Ujjwal Nikam Story managed ₹17.15 crore India net across its entire first week — exactly what Jailer 2 collected in India on day 8 alone. Yami Gautam’s Nayyi Navelli stands at ₹29.06 crore worldwide, and iDiva’s tally credits Jailer 2 with $22.6 million from overseas by day 8. Three films clashed; one of them is doing essentially all the business.
Why this matters: Jailer 2’s pace cements its place among 2026’s biggest box-office successes and raises the bar for what Tamil tentpoles are expected to deliver. What to watch next: the second-weekend hold — steady footfalls through Sunday keep ₹700 crore in play — and then the challenger on the horizon. Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana arrives worldwide on November 5 with over ₹5 crore in advance bookings already, premium IMAX 3D seats priced at ₹2,770, and a JioHotstar streaming berth after its theatrical run — though its new Ravana Tandav song, featuring Yash, has drawn mixed reactions online.
