Quick biography

Shubman Singh Gill was born on September 8, 1999, in Fazilka district, Punjab, India, into a Punjabi Sikh farming family. His father, who had dreamed of playing cricket himself, trained the young Gill relentlessly, bowling him hundreds of balls a day, and in 2007 moved the family to Mohali so his son could train near the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium. The move paid off early: Gill scored 351 in an Under-16 inter-district match and a double century on his Under-16 debut for Punjab.

Gill announced himself on the world stage as Player of the Tournament at the 2018 Under-19 World Cup, scoring 372 runs as India lifted the title. He made his ODI debut against New Zealand on January 31, 2019, and his Test debut at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on December 26, 2020, following it with a match-shaping 91 in India’s famous series-clinching win at the Gabba. In January 2023, aged 23, he smashed 208 off 149 balls against New Zealand to become the youngest batter to score an ODI double century, and he went on to become the fastest player to reach both 2,000 ODI runs (in 38 innings) and 2,500 (in 50). In the IPL he won the 2023 Orange Cap with 890 runs for Gujarat Titans, whom he has captained since 2024.
