Quick biography
Lionel Messi was born on June 24, 1987, in Rosario, Argentina. At 13 he moved to Spain to join FC Barcelona’s famed La Masia youth academy, making his first-team debut in 2004 at the age of 17.
Messi spent most of his career at Barcelona, becoming the club’s all-time top scorer and winning a record eight Ballon d’Or awards. After a spell at Paris Saint-Germain he joined Inter Miami in 2023. With Argentina he won the Copa América in 2021 and the FIFA World Cup in 2022, cementing his place among the sport’s all-time greats.
As a child Messi was diagnosed with a growth-hormone deficiency; Barcelona offered to pay for his treatment if his family moved to Spain — the gamble that brought him to La Masia. Early in his Argentina career he endured heartbreak, including the 2014 World Cup final defeat, before the breakthrough Copa América title in 2021 and the epic 2022 World Cup final against France, settled on penalties.
