Quick biography

Derrick Lamar Henry Jr. was born on January 4, 1994, in Yulee, Florida, a small town near Jacksonville, to teenage parents Stacy Veal and Derrick Henry Sr., and was raised mainly by his grandmother, Gladys. Football came early and stayed with him: at Yulee High School he rushed for a national-record 12,124 career yards, breaking a record that had stood for 59 years, and finished his school career as the most prolific rusher in American high school history.

At the University of Alabama, Henry’s junior season in 2015 became one of the great college campaigns: he ran for 2,219 yards and 28 touchdowns, breaking Herschel Walker’s single-season Southeastern Conference rushing record, and swept the sport’s top honours — the Heisman Trophy, the Doak Walker Award, the Maxwell Award and the Walter Camp Award — before helping the Crimson Tide win the College Football Playoff national championship. He left Alabama as the school’s all-time rushing leader and entered the 2016 NFL Draft, where the Tennessee Titans picked him in the second round.
